About This Game

The Diagramless Crossword is a way of playing without using the puzzle itself as a hint. Only the grid is given, without numbers or blocked squares. It is up to you to fill those in! Use the clue numbering and answers to figure out which squares the answers go in! This can be a very challening way to play simpler crossword puzzles.

A friend (Hey, Bart!) and I thought we'd invented this way of playing crosswords to challenge ourselves. Turns out it's a real thing but not easy to find ... so I built it!

Make sure to check out the instructions on the puzzle page to see which keys are used to navigate the puzzle.

Logging in will let you keep track of which puzzles you've finished. The passwords are only semi-secure, so please don't reuse important usernames and passwords. The user/pass here is only to keep your answers separate from other people's and so you can log in from multiple locations.

This is a side project done as a way for me to learn a few development tools that don't always get a lot of use. That said, feel free to reach out to me if you see a bug or would like a feature!

KNOWN-BUG: Some puzzles have characters like emoji that don't fit into the standard character set ... long story short, some clues are missing "characters" like emoticons.

The puzzles update daily and I'll be updating this sometimes, so check back frequently and enjoy!

Instructions

General Info

If you are logged in, saving happens automatically ten seconds after no entries have been made or changed. The green bar resets when changing the puzzle and when it disappears, the puzzle saves.
When the puzzle is solved, it will light up for you!

Auto Numbering

Enable and disable auto number with the slider.
Auto numbering will add numbers based solely on the location of blocked squares.
This means auto numbering will be wrong if your blocks are wrong!
Auto numbering is disabled if you type a number manually.

Hints

Getting a hint uses a point AND causes this puzzle's max score to drop by 1.
Hints will add blocks first, then fix mistakes, then add missing letters.
Hints will be marked in green on the puzzle and be unchangeable.
A newly given hint will be in red at first.

Mobile Navigation

Click on a square to highlight it.
Click again to change the direction of entry.

PC Navigation

Click on a square to highlight it.
Click again to change the direction of entry.
Arrow keys move around the puzzle.
Home and End go to the beginning or end of the current row or column.
Enter goes to the next cell.

Entering Information

Type any letter to enter a letter. The cell will advance. Typing over existing letters will replace the letter.
Type any number to enter a clue number manually. The cell remains highlighted so you can enter multi-digit numbers. Typing over existing numbers will start over.
Press the spacebar to set a "block".

Clearing Information

To clear a letter, press Delete or Backspace.
To clear a number, press the minus (-) key.
To clear a blocked square, press spacebar again.
To clear the whole puzzle and start over, use this button:
